Jobs in the music industry

There are many jobs in the music besides being an artist. This field provides a very good opportunity for people to use their musical talents to earn a living and make a career out of music.

Originally, the field of music was limited to self-amusement or public performances. However nowadays, as the music industry is expanding, those with a taste for music can leverage their skills and earn good money in a variety of ways.

The music industry has many different jobs and interesting position . Recent technology has led to advances in music and the production which in turn has opened up more field of work. On the production of an album, there are always numerous people that get credit for the production, besides the artists themselves such as music technicians and engineers.

Careers in music are both fun and rewarding, however jobs in the music industry require a great deal of hard work.

Musicians and Singers

Careers as musicians and singers are considered the most important in the entertainment industry. These careers can also be seen as a second job or a hobby. No formal education is required to become a singer or musician. However, it is very important to have a high level of talent and character. You can take professional singing lessons or learn a musical instrument at special schools or institutions. Many people even learn from YouTube tutorial videos these days.

Music Teachers

In this job you can use your musical talent to educate others in the field of music. Music teachers can find work in musical institutions, schools, private practices, schools of arts and other similar facilities. To become of certified music teacher, you can have formal education, such as a degree in music studies.

Audio Engineers or a Disc Jockey

This is an area that requires a strong knowledge of music, and of the technologies related. Audio engineers or DJ’s are the engineers who operate the mixer and console to improve sound output and quality. Audio engineers normally work in the studio, while DJ’s can work in bars, clubs, restaurants etc.They must be in touch with the latest technologies related to music. DJ’s in particular should be aware what the latest music trends are and what type of music is suitable for a certain type of crowd. e.g. age group or occasion.

Music Instrument Technicians

Musicians will inevitably have to deal with a lot of material and complex configurations, which is why you need the services of technicians.  Technicians will need to  have extensive technical knowledge of the processing and maintenance of musical instruments and their sound quality. For example, a guitar technician should be able to clean the guitar, change strings and pickups, arrange guitar pedals and cabling etc.. The same would apply to other musical instruments.

Tour / Concert managers

Artists and bands will normally go on tour and do live concerts. The administration management the  travel arrangements for each concert is very important. This is where you need the services of a tour and concert manager. Carers and concert organizers look after the administration of the tour and the actual event, including booking tickets, scheduling concerts, promotional activities, band photo shoots, and other activities. Such personnel are required to be versatile in the area of music and administration.

Music Producers

Of course a very important role in the world of music, a music producer is the person who manages all phases of a project, whether it be  a live show or a studio album. This professional must help the band or artist get their album mixed and edited in the studio. He has other responsibilities as well, which mainly include getting a record deal and supervising the activities for the promotion of an album. A music producer is generally an experienced musician and performer themselves.

Conductors

A conductor is said to be the master of music, both in the theoretical and practical aspects. This job in the music industry would need to be a professional who leads the choirs and music ensembles in a musical arrangement by using management techniques. To enter this challenging career in the music industry, you must have a degree in music education and to be proficient with playing musical instruments. The role of a conductor is extremely important, as all the musicians and singers depend on their instructions during a performance.

Music Sales Executive

Sales representatives of music are those found in music shops and exhibitions to help customers to buy the products. They can also give demonstrations and information on products launched by various companies. Anyone can become a sales manager of music, provided they have  good marketing and communication skills and are familiar with musical instruments.

Music Editor

A music editor is an individual who operates mainly in the film industry. Music is always an essential part of film production, which is organized by musical director. In this job you would work with an image editor and set the soundtracks of a movie. It also defines how and when the music is to be played in the film. A standard requirement for entering this career is the possession of qualifications in audio production, sound engineering, or music technology.

Music Journalist

Music journalism is to study, observe and write music. Typically, a music journalist would listen to songs, attending live concerts, visit musicians, conduct interviews, and write about all of these experiences for music magazines, newspapers, or the Internet. This is a job in the music industry that involves a great deal of research and writing. If you intend to become a music journalist, you must have a degree in journalism and have an inclination towards music.

Music Therapist

This is a completely different kind of a job within the music industry as it combines the theories related to music with those of health care. Since it is well known that music plays a very important role in improving the mental health, music is used in music therapy treatments. This therapy includes special analysis of the emotional needs of a person and the use of sessions and musical practices to meet those needs. Common practices in a work of music therapy include musical composition, listening to music, writing songs, playing instruments, and other similar related to the treatment of diseases through music.

To build a successful career in the music industry, you must be willing to expand your knowledge and skills according to the needs of the time and keep up to date on the latest developments in the field. Basic knowledge of music and knowledge of sound systems, recording equipment and musical instruments, it is always useful in any job in the music industry
