Here I have used the 2-5-1 theory and made the “1” a minor chord to make it sound more soulful.
E.g. the standard 2-5-1 in the key of C major would be – Dmin, G7 and Cmaj. All I have done is changed the Cmaj, the resolving chord to a minor. Remember chords to not have to resolve like theory tells us however they must sit comfortably in the progression. Changing the Cmaj to Cmin gives an unresolved but pleasant soulful feeling. Pop and Rock would probably have more of the resolving chords for a wider audience or casual listener.
I have applied the same theory for the other chords too.
Bbmin, Eb7, Abmaj, Abmin
Gmin, C7, Fmaj, Fmin
That’s all.
There are quite a few Neo Soul tracks made with just the two chords and maybe a third thrown in for the bridge. Erykah Badu’s On and On is a good example
Great, keep up the good work son.
Melody and voicing can make a great difference in how chords sound. Therefore even with only two chords a good melody line can add variation and depth to simple chords.
